Academic/Scholar Stream

The CNPC invites scholars, both academic and grassroots, to submit paper proposals for the Scholarship Stream on Saturday, May 16, 2009. The conference is an opportunity for Canadian Neo-Pagans to exchange information, networks, and encourage the exploration and identity of Canadian Neo-Paganism.

We encourage paper submissions from Canadian scholars doing research with Neo-Pagan traditions and communities, or of interest to these communities. Papers related to our theme this year are expecially encouraged. Abstracts should be 300 words, with a representative reference list. Presentations shall not exceed 20 minutes. Submissions will be refereed by Neo-Pagan academics.

Lucie DuFresne, University of Ottawa, will be coordinating the academic/scholar stream this year. If you have something you'd like to submit, or for more information, please contact her at: academic(at)gaiagathering.ca.

Early Bird Deadline Approaching!

‘Just a reminder that our next Early-Bird deadline is approaching for registration.

Register before February 28th, 2009 and pay only $80 for three days of presentations, discussions, and meeting fellow Pagans from across the country. Social events will be available for an extra fee. Our banquet gala on Sunday night is a ‘steal’ at $30 (vegetarian options available.) To download the registration form, click here.

While you’re travelling to Vancouver, why not take the opportunity to see the Rockies? It’s off-season for ViaRail, so fares are comparatively inexpensive. Some sample travel return fares to Vancouver are $246 (taxes included) from Edmonton ($718 if you want a berth), $377 from Winnipeg ($943 if you want a berth), and $804 from Montreal ($1650 if you want a berth). There’s also the option of flying one-way and training the return, or vice versa.

Some examples of current return airfares to Vancouver (taxes and surcharges included) through Air Canada are $250 from Calgary , $366 from Winnipeg, $470 from Toronto, and $680 from Halifax. West Jet fares are usually similar, but check them out for your selves.

Accommodations start at $38/night for a single dorm accommodation. Or gather together six friends and share a suite with a fully equipped kitchenette for $259 (maximum occupancy is seven people). Visit our accommodations page to book online: Click here.

If travel fees are completely out of your reach, but you’d like to contribute to Gaia Gathering, consider volunteering to help out during the event and apply for one of our travel scholarships. For more information see our website. Click here.

Have money left over after booking your travel? Consider donating to our travel fund to sponsor those of us on tighter budgets and from further away. Simply indicate the amount of your donation on your registration form.

We look forward to seeing you in Vancouver!

Programme Advertising

Once again this year, we will be producing a conference programme highlighting the activities of the weekend, presenters, bids for the 2011 conference, local information, and more. Every participant will receive a conference programme as part of the registration package when they check-in at the registration desk.

To offset the cost of producing the programme, as well as the cost of the conference itself, we accept paid advertising in this programme. If you run a business, advertising in the programme is a great way to get visibility for as little as $35. It's also a tax deductible as a business expense. If you don't run your own business but work for a Pagan-friendly company, consider asking them if they'd like to advertise in the programme; or consider running a fun 'ad' of support.

Advertising rates, based on 8.5 by 11 sheet size, are as follows:
Full Page $185
1/2 Page $95
1/4 Page $50
1/8 page (business card) $35

Ads should be in a standard graphics format and insertion ready. Deadline for submissions is April 21, 2009.

Travel Subsidies

Coming from accross the country and wondering how you can afford to travel to Gaia Gatheirng this year?

Each year, we provide travel subsidy assistance to encourage participation of Pagans from across this country. This year, attendees would be eligible from Ontario, Quebec and East, and from the far north (the territories). The subsidy is made possible through the generous voluntary donations of conference participants and donors.

If you'd like to apply for the subsidy, please forward us a written request, either by email or with yyour conference registration. Please include in the request:

  1. Where you are from.
  2. An explanation for your need.
  3. How you will be helping the conference by attending (ie, panel member, presenting a paper in the academic/scholar stream, volunteering on-site, etc)
  4. A wriitten budget outlining costs to attend the conference, and outlining what contribution you are requesting
Most travel subsidies are paid out at the end of the conference, although you will be informed that you will be receiving a travel subsidy, and how much you will receive, prior to the conference. In some cases the CNPC may pre-pay some costs.

When you apply does count. Deadline for applications will be March 21, 2009. Decisions for awarding subsidy to applications will be made by end of March, 2009.

If you want more information, or to send in our application for travel subsidy, please contact us at info(at)gaiagathering.ca
